The Art of Being Understood: Why Clear Communication is Our Greatest Challenge

In the quiet beauty of the Jemez Valley, we often value the stillness. But when we do speak, are we actually being heard? We’ve all heard the cliché that “communication is key,” but in practice, it’s less of a silver bullet and more of a difficult, lifelong craft.

Success—whether in our careers, our local community boards, or at the dinner table—hinges on the ability to transfer an idea from one brain to another without it getting mangled in transit. Yet, more often than not, we fall into three common traps that muddy the waters.

The Three Barriers to Clarity

We often default to “autopilot” modes of talking that actually prevent connection:

  • The “Supposed To” Agreement: We frequently nod along and agree to what we think we should agree to, rather than expressing our true stance. This “polite silence” creates a foundation of resentment and misunderstanding.
  • The Forceful Opinion: On the flip side, we sometimes bulldoze through conversations. When we force our opinions on others, the other person stops listening and starts defending. Communication ends, and a power struggle begins.
  • The Silent Withdrawal: Sometimes, we just don’t speak up at all. Whether it’s from fear of conflict or a belief that “it won’t matter anyway,” silence is often interpreted as agreement or apathy, neither of which helps reach a goal.

Removing the Fog of Emotion

In a tight-knit community like ours, emotions can run high because we care deeply. However, success in communication often requires us to momentarily set aside the “heat” to look at the “light.” When we communicate without the fog of unchecked emotion, we find that most conflicts are simply data errors—misunderstandings of intent or timing.

The Bottom Line: Clear communication isn’t something that happens by accident. It’s a deliberate act of bravery. It takes courage to speak your truth, patience to listen to another’s, and the discipline to ensure the right words are landing in the right way.
