History of the Jemez Mountain Trail Sale

July 28, 2025

The Jemez Mountain Trail Sale is a true testament to the power of community. Over the years, many people have contributed to its success, but Jemez Valley residents are the heart and soul of this…

From Humble Beginnings to a Beloved Tradition

The origins of the Trail Sale are traced back to the early 2000s, likely between 2001 and 2003. In its nascent years, the event was a bit sporadic, shifting dates and sometimes even skipping a year. However, its true potential was realized in 2012 when it finally found its permanent home on the third weekend of October—a stroke of genius that perfectly coincided with the peak of the fall foliage, showcasing the Jemez Valley at its most breathtaking.

The incredible vision for this event sprang from the minds of Lin Seeling, Leone Wilson, and the then-Jemez Valley Business Association (JVBA). Inspired by Tennessee’s expansive 127 Corridor Sale, which boasts an impressive 690 miles of yard sales, they envisioned a similar, albeit shorter, concept for their own valley. Their goal was clear: to create a valley-wide yard sale that would directly benefit the residents of the Jemez Valley. Thus, the “26-Mile Trail Sale” was born, designed to span the length of the valley from San Ysidro to La Cueva.

Growth, Evolution, and Community Collaboration

The year 2013 marked a pivotal moment for the Trail Sale’s expansion. Dick Nelson, alongside the Jemez Valley Community Association (JVCA) and the Jemez Springs Lodger’s Tax Board, joined forces with the original organizers. This collaboration was instrumental in transforming the event into the massive success it is today. Dick Nelson, in particular, played a key role by coordinating with CWW Feed and WEEKENDS to produce and sell the popular “Jemez Springs – Just South West of Normal” t-shirts, which served as a successful fundraiser for the Trail Sale.

In 2015, a strategic name change occurred. The “26-Mile Trail Sale” officially became the “Jemez Mountain Trail Sale.” This rebranding was designed to align the event with the renowned Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway, a 163-mile route starting in Los Alamos, extending to La Cueva, then to Cuba, east to San Ysidro, and back north to La Cueva. This change opened the door for anyone along this scenic byway to participate, significantly expanding the event’s reach. We’re also thrilled to announce that Cuba, NM, is celebrating its third year as a proud participant in this grand event.
