About Hummingbird Music Camp
Nestled alongside the scenic Jemez River, Hummingbird Music Camp is one of New Mexico’s most cherished and longest-running youth traditions. Founded in 1959 by passionate educators K.L. and Wanda Higgins, the camp has spent generations providing an enriching, community-centered retreat for kids aged 8 to 14.
Operating for 8 weeks every summer, Hummingbird offers immersive, week-long overnight programs (Sunday to Sunday) where campers can build confidence, make lifelong friends, and explore their creative passions. Under the continuous stewardship of the Higgins family, the camp proudly maintains its foundational “kids first” philosophy.
Specialized Track Programs Offered:
- Music Camp: Group and individual instruction spanning band, orchestra, piano, guitar, and voice, culminating in beautiful weekend concerts.
- Art Camp: Creative, hands-on fine art instruction (available during 6 of the 8 camp weeks).
- Chess Camp: Immersive strategy and tactical coaching led by experienced players (offered during designated weeks).
Local Community Traditions
Hummingbird Music Camp is tightly woven into the cultural fabric of Jemez Springs. Visitors and locals alike look forward to the camp’s traditional Saturday night concerts, often held in collaboration with historic local landmarks like the Jemez Historic Site, where the talented young campers showcase what they’ve learned over the week.
