Gilman Tunnels Reopening in Jemez: A Welcome Return

The iconic Gilman Tunnels in the Jemez Mountains are set to reopen on May 2, following extensive stabilization work. This project, aimed at ensuring the safety and longevity of the tunnels, involved removing loose and unstable rocks, injecting a stabilizing substance into the rock face, and installing bolts to increase stability. A similar project was successfully completed in the area in 2017.

During the stabilization process, the area has been closed to all traffic, including motorized, non-motorized, and foot traffic. The closure will remain in effect until May 2, when the tunnels will once again be accessible to the public.

In addition to the reopening of the Gilman Tunnels, the Santa Fe National Forest Jemez Ranger District has announced the reopening of several other roads and recreation sites. Here is the schedule for the reopens:

  • March 31: Forest Road 10 Corridor opens.
  • April 11: All other District roads open, including Forest Road 376 from New Mexico State Road 126 to the Gilman Tunnels.
  • May 2: Gilman Tunnels open.
  • July 1: Forest Road 376 from its junction with NM State Road 126 north to its terminus at the San Antonio Hot Springs Trailhead opens.

It’s important to note that the area will be closed to motorized traffic from March 3, 2025, through July 1, 2025. However, non-motorized use is permitted for hikers and bicyclists who wish to use the road as an access point to San Antonio Canyon.

The reopening of the Gilman Tunnels and surrounding areas is eagerly anticipated by locals and visitors alike. These historic tunnels, carved through solid rock, offer breathtaking views and a unique glimpse into the region’s past. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an outdoor adventurer, or simply looking for a scenic drive, the Gilman Tunnels are a must-visit destination in the Jemez Mountains.

Mark your calendars and get ready to explore the beauty and history of the Gilman Tunnels once they reopen on May 2!
