Rev. Gerald Michael Cushing Fitzgerald was an influential American Catholic priest born on October 29, 1894, in Framingham, Massachusetts. He was the second of eight sons in his family. After graduating from Weymouth High School, he attended Boston College and later entered St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Boston on May 21, 1921.
Father Fitzgerald began his ministry as a parish priest in Boston, serving for 12 years before joining the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1933. He was deeply moved by the plight of priests struggling with issues such as celibacy, alcoholism, and substance abuse. This led him to found the Congregation of the Servants of the Paraclete in 1947, which was dedicated to helping priests facing these challenges.
Father Fitzgerald was known for his strong stance against reassigning priests who had committed sexual misconduct, advocating for their defrocking instead. His work and vision were driven by a profound sense of compassion and commitment to the priesthood, emphasizing the importance of prayer and spiritual renewal for priests.
He passed away on June 28, 1969, but his legacy continues through the centers he established to support priests in need.
