Jemez Historic Site

Jemez Historic Site

Nestled in the Village of Jemez Springs, just a short drive from Albuquerque and Bernalillo, the Jemez National Historic Landmark is a breathtaking destination in the Southwest. This remarkable site showcases the stone remnants of a 700-year-old village and the historic San José de los Jémez church, constructed in 1621-22. The village of Gisewa, built by the ancestors of today’s Jemez Pueblo (Walatowa), lies in the scenic San Diego Canyon, named for its natural hot springs. In the 17th century, the Spanish established a Catholic mission at Gisewa. Though the mission was short-lived, the inhabitants eventually relocated to the present-day Jemez Pueblo. The impressive stone walls of the landmark were erected around the same time as the Pilgrims’ arrival at Plymouth Rock. The heritage center offers exhibitions that share the site’s rich history through the voices of the Jemez people. Visitors can explore the landmark via a 1,400-foot interpretive trail, winding through this awe-inspiring site.
