Cuba, NM: A Historic Legacy
History of Cuba, NM
Originally known as Nacimiento or La Laguna, Cuba’s roots trace back to 1766 when 35 pioneering Spanish families settled the headwaters of the Rio Puerco, granted the land by Governor Pedro Fermin de Mendinueta. While the community was temporarily abandoned due to frontier Indian raids, it was resettled in the late 1870s and officially renamed Cuba with the establishment of its post office in 1887. For centuries before that, this wilderness was used by the Apache, Navajo, and Pueblo people, many of whom continue to weave their ancestral traditions into daily life. Evidence of this rich past can be found in the area’s landforms, which are integral to indigenous lore.
